You’ve tried the deep breathing apps, the gratitude journals, and the positive affirmations, but they feel like trying to put out a forest fire with a water pistol. Your mind is telling you that you are safe, but your body is screaming that you are in danger. This is why you can’t just 'think' yourself calm. If your vagus nerve is sending signals of danger from your gut and heart to your brain, your brain will continue to produce anxious thoughts to match that physical feeling. To change the thoughts, we must change the signals coming from the body. By improving 'vagal tone,' we increase our body’s ability to bounce back from stress.

Practical Exercise 1: The Physiological Sigh

One of the fastest ways to signal safety to the brain is through the breath, but not just any breath. The physiological sigh is a biological hack that offloads carbon dioxide and pops open the tiny air sacs (alveoli) in your lungs, which triggers the vagus nerve to slow the heart rate.

  1. Find a comfortable seated or lying position. You don't need to be perfectly still; just be supported.
  2. Inhale deeply through your nose for a count of 3.
  3. At the very top of that inhale, take a second, shorter 'sip' of air through your nose to fully expand the lungs.
  4. Exhale very slowly through pursed lips (like you are blowing through a straw) for a count of 6 to 8.
  5. Repeat this for 3 to 5 cycles. Notice if your shoulders drop even a fraction of an inch.

Practical Exercise 2: Somatic Shaking for Energy Discharge

When animals in the wild survive a predator attack, they instinctively shake their bodies. This discharges the massive amount of sympathetic energy (adrenaline) they built up during the chase. Humans, however, often suppress this urge, 'bottling up' the stress. Somatic shaking helps complete that biological cycle.

  1. Stand with your feet hip-width apart and your knees slightly soft (not locked).
  2. Begin to gently bounce from your knees, letting your heels tap the floor rhythmically.
  3. Start to shake your hands and wrists, as if you are trying to shake water off your fingertips.
  4. Allow the shaking to travel up your arms, into your shoulders, and through your torso. You can even let your jaw hang loose and make a soft 'ahhh' sound.
  5. Continue this for 2 minutes. When you stop, stand in stillness for 30 seconds and notice the 'tingling' or 'buzzing' sensation in your limbs. This is the feeling of your nervous system resetting.

The Importance of Titration: Going Slow to Heal Fast

A common mistake in nervous system regulation is trying to do too much at once. If you have been in a state of high alert for years, suddenly trying to be 'calm' can actually feel threatening to your system. In somatic experiencing, we call the process of going slow 'titration.'
